El Chaltén - Valleys and Icebergs
El Chaltén is a small tourist valley at the base of Fitz Roy Mountain, in Lago Argentino region, on the northern shore of Lake Viedma, Santa Cruz province. It's located at the core of the Patagonian Andes, in the National Reserve of Los Glaciares National Park, Viedma area. Known as the national capital of trekking, this place offers a great variety of circuits which allow you to get in contact with nature while practicing outdoor activities, for most of which you don't need previous experience. At every step, you'll find dreamlike panoramic views and hidden landscapes, which invite you to relax in a place where the magic of the glaciers is always present. The most popular activities in the area are trekking, mountaineering, camping, horseback riding, as well as photography tours and a variety of excursions, rock climbing lessons, bird watching, fishing and visits to the well-known farms of Santa Cruz. Fitz Roy Mountain, which expels mythical charm, is generally covered by clouds. Native Tehuelche communities that inhabited this land used to think that the clouds were smoke and thought the mountain was actually a volcano. For that reason, they called the place "Chaltén", which means "smoking mountain" in the aonikenk dialect. The summits of Torre and Fitz Roy mountains are the main tourist attractions together with Viedma, Upsala and Moyano glaciers.
